In principle it is noble and good to take care of your friends and family. To feed them, nurture them and love them unconditionally. However, we do need to understand that taking care of people if and when they are in need of such care, does give us the added responsibility to make sure that in time they will gain their independence back to as high a degree as possible. If our efforts are not aimed towards enhancing the autonomy of the person we are caring for we are not contributing to their life, but are we diminishing their agency. So for today the message is to seek out if we are smothering our loved ones or if we are suffering from somebody else's smothering. If we are, we need to end it. It's probably not ill-intended, just ill-understood, so let's be gentle about.
